Caterpillar pipelayers are specialized machines built specifically for the demanding task of laying heavy pipe in long, continuous lines. Unlike a standard crane, these machines are built on a rugged dozer-style chassis with a side-mounted boom and heavy counterweights to prevent tipping. They are designed to work in "fleets," where several machines move together in perfect sync to lift, carry, and lower massive sections of welded pipe into trenches. Because they often work on steep hills or in muddy marshes, they feature wide tracks and a low center of gravity to stay stable. Inside the cab, the controls are simplified to give the operator precise winch and boom movement, ensuring the pipe is handled gently to avoid damaging the protective coating.
